Frequently Asked Questions

How many flowers does it take to make a gram of saffron?

It would take around 167 flowers to make one gram of dried saffron.

How many corms do I plant per area?

The general recommended planting density is 60-120 corms per m2 (6-12 corms per ft2). Remember to leave room for aisles!

How many years should corms remain in the same planting bed?

Generally: four years. The corms will divide, creating daughter corms. Therefore, the more corms, the higher the yield. When the corms become too densely packed (around 3-6 years depending on planting density), the yield will begin to decrease. It is recommended that producers monitor their yields for signs of decreasing yield. When yield drops, the corms should be dug up and replanted.

How many flowers are produced from an individual saffron corm?

In short, it depends on the corm size, time of planting and the growing conditions.. The number of flowers depends on the size of the corm, when it was planted, and the growing conditions. Larger corms will produce more flowers. In subsequent years, one large corm can produce 2-4 flowers if conditions are right.

Where can saffron grow in Canada?

Saffron prefers Zones 5-8. You can see your zone on the map below:

Or check out the Government of Canada website: http://planthardiness.gc.ca/?m=1.

What if my farm is not in Zones 5-8?

You might be able to grow saffron in high tunnels and milk crates. The high tunnels will protect the corms from the elements while the milk crates will protect from rodents. The milk crates also allow for easy exchange of plants for when the high tunnel is needed for other crops.

Should I soak the corms in water before planting?

No, it is recommended that you first plant the corm, tamp the soil down, then water.

How deep should I plant the corms?

In short, it varies. You should plant them about 16 cm deep in most soils. If the soil tends to be wet, you should plant slightly higher at about 10-13cm. If the soil freezes, it is recommended to plant them lower than 16cm to help them overwinter.

How can I tell if the saffron I purchased is actually saffron?

If you add the saffron into water or milk, it will release its characteristic yellow colour. If it becomes red or any other colour, it is most likely not pure saffron.

What spices are used to imitate saffron?

Generally, safflower and turmeric are used to mimic saffron. The safflower has a similar thread structure and turmeric imitates its yellow properties.
